Landscaping
Overview
The Landscaping Program is comprised of three classes focused on competency-based learning, emphasizing three key areas: horticulture, agriculture, and landscape design. Students gain practical experience through hands-on and in class instruction.
The competencies in the following courses are aligned with the California High School Academic Content Standards and the California Career Technical Education Model Curriculum Standards.
Landscaping 1
Brief Course Description: This competency-based course is the first in a sequence of three designed for landscaping. It provides students with technical instruction and practical experience in workplace safety, handling and caring for basic landscaping tools, part one of plant identification, types of soil, planning and maintaining an ornamental garden, basic landscape design, and water management.
- Course Prerequisites:
- Prior completion of STEP Orientation
- Ability to bend, lift, and carry heavy items as required in the industry.
Landscaping 2
Brief Course Description: This competency-based course is the second in a sequence of three designed for landscaping. It provides students with technical instruction and practical experience in workplace safety, handling and caring for power hand tools, part two of plant identification, soil analysis, weed abatement, pruning, plant propogation and a review of water management.

- Prior completion of STEP Orientation
- Completion of Landscaping 1
- Ability to bend, lift, and carry heavy items as required in the industry.
Landscaping 3
Brief Course Description: This competency-based course is the last in a sequence of three designed for landscaping. It provides students with technical instruction and practical experience in workplace safety, part three of plant identification, techniques in landscape construction and design, turf maintenance, fertilization, pest management, greenhouse operations, water management review, and entrepreneurship/legal aspects of landscaping business.

- Prior completion of STEP Orientation
- Completion of Landscaping 2
- Ability to bend, lift, and carry heavy items as required in the industry.
NOTES:
- Separate costs for books, exams, supplies, preparation, certifications and/or licenses provided by outside vendors may be incured.

Once a Certificate of Completion is earned in a course, that course cannot be repeated.
