DID YOU KNOW? States seem to have as many names for this holiday and ideas about whom to honor as there have been U.S. presidents. Not even the federal government recognizes Monday as "Presidents' Day." It’s officially known as "Washington’s Birthday," honoring the first U.S. president and the original American yardstick for measuring executive office greatness.
Even more interesting, the holiday hasn’t been celebrated on Washington’s actual birthday of February 22nd, (or any other president’s birthday,) for more than 50 years. Presidents' Day became the popular name after the holiday was fixed to the 3rd Monday in February.
Although the correct punctuation for the holiday's name is to follow the word Presidents with a final apostrophe, Presidents' Day, it has become common to see the punctuation mark omitted.
